Ex-Ipswich Town boss emerges as favourite for the Barnsley job

Mick McCarthy is the 7/2 favourite for the vacant Barnsley job on SkyBet.

The 59-year-old was born in Barnsley and played over 250 games for the Tykes in his playing days. Barnsley are in the hunt for a new manager as Jose Morais left the club yesterday after they were relegated to League One.

The Tykes lost 4-1 to Derby County at the IPro Stadium and Bolton Wanderers’ dramatic 3-2 win against Nottingham Forest resulted in them getting relegated back to third tier along with Burton Albion.

Barnsley are now looking for a manager who can mount a promotion push over the summer as they look to get back to the Championship next season at the first time of asking. Mick McCarthy is the bookies favourite and he would be a popular appointment amongst the Oakwell favourite.

He left Ipswich Town last month and is available. The experienced boss has previously managed Millwall, Republic of Ireland, Sunderland, Wolves and the Tractor Boys. He did a decent job with Ipswich on a limited budget and will be a man in demand in the Football League over the coning months.

Shortly behind McCarthy on the SkyBet running for Barnsley job are former Bradford City boss Stuart McCall (4/1), Lincoln City’s Danny Cowley (8/1) and Uwe Rosler (8/1). The Tykes do have a strong core of players and will be an interesting proposition for managers out there.
