Oldham Athletic have been relegated to Sky Bet League Two following a 2-2 draw at Sixfields which sees Northampton also relegated.

Richie Wellens opted to make one change from his starting eleven with Wilfried Moimbe replacing midfielder Kundai Benyu.

As for Northampton, Sam Foley and Brendan Moloney came into the side as the curtain came down on the 2017/18 season. Matt Crooks (hamstring) missed out while Morgan Roberts from the academy was named on the bench.

It was a relatively quiet opening to the game as neither side created any real chances in the first 10 minutes of the game. The home side shaded the early possession as it took Latics a while to get going.

The first clear cut chance fell to Oldham as a corner into the box found Duckens Nazon at the back post but he could only manage to loop over.

Oldham striker Eoin Doyle decided to pass instead of shoot when presented with an opportunity in the box whilst at the other end, Northampton defender Ash Taylor headed just wide from 12 yards.

On the 26th minute Latics finally worked Richard O’Donnell in the Northampton goal when Jack Byrne played in Nazon and he forced a save from the goalkeeper from inside the area.

On the half an hour mark, Oldham took the lead as George Edmundson he fired home from around 12 yards out (0-1).

Oldham looked in control until minutes later a ball through the middle found Sam Hoskins, Johny Placide could not save and Tom Hamer brought down the striker inside the box.

Matt Grimes stepped up and smashed the ball into the top corner to level things up (1-1).

Just before half time Northampton took the lead as a corner into the box found Leon Barnett who fired goalwards.

Placide spilt the ball onto the post and Taylor followed up and fired past the goalkeeper to put the Cobblers ahead at half time (2-1).

Both sides managed to create early chances in the second half as Taylor headed just wide from eight yards for the home side whilst Dan Gardner had a shot which went past the post from long range.

On the 55th minute Latics were level courtesy of younger defender Tom Hamer.

The second year youth scholar met a cross into the box from Byrne and he powerfully headed beyond O’Donnell to equalise for Latics (2-2)

Oldham attacked and on 65 minutes, Davies met a cross into the box from Wilfried Moimbe could only manage to head over from six yards.

Gardner limped off injured on 73 minutes who was replaced by Benyu whilst two minutes later, Nazon raced at the defence and shot but he fired wide from 18 yards.

Latics were forced into some defending as time started to run out. Grimes struck a free kick 30 yards from goal which Placide had to tip over the crossbar.

Oldham pushed for a winner but was unable to find a goal, and with Rochdale beating Charlton this meant that Oldham have been relegated to Sky Bet League Two after 21 years of League One football.
