Sheffield Wednesday boss confirms talks for defender

Sheffield Wednesday boss Jos Luhukay has confirmed that the Owls are in talk to sign on-loan defender Frederico Venancio.

Wednesday signed the defender on a season-long loan from Portuguese side Vitória, but he may well be extending his stay in Yorkshire.

Speaking in a broadcast on the club’s official social media outlet Facebook, Luhukay believes that Venancio’s stay at Hillsborough isn’t over in the summer:

He stays under contract in Portugal, with Vitória Setubal. They must decide what they want for the future with Fred Venancio. So we have not the situation where we can decide, the club (Vitória) must find a solution for Fred.

“We are speaking about that (a permanent move). (But) also we have not now a concrete situation. We must have the patience (and hope we) come to something positive.”

Venancio’s final game of his loan spell will come at the end of season finale at Hillsborough against Norwich City, with both sides having nothing to play for.

And according to reports in Portugal, Sheffield Wednesday have already agreed a fee with the Portuguese side to make the transfer permanent. A £2.5 million deal is thought to have been put in place earlier in the season.

Venancio came through the ranks at Vitória before being poached by Benfica in 2010. However, the centre-back wouldn’t last long in Lisbon, returning to Vitória just a season after leaving.

His breakthrough came in 2013 and since then he has made 115 appearances for the Primeira Liga side.

Wednesday snapped him up on loan in the summer, with the defender being played 23 times this season under both managers Luhukay and Carlos Carvahal.
