Wolves beating Premier League giants in tussle for Southampton defender

Premier League new boys Wolves have overtaken Manchester United in the running to sign Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand.

The Birmingham Mail believe that Wolves are now favourites to sign the former Champions League winner if Southampton were relegated to the Sky Bet Championship.

Wolves are currently strong in terms of full-backs with Scotland international Barry Douglas’ fine form since his move from Turkish side Konyaspor.

The Scot has scored five goals this season as well as assisting another 14, which shows that Wolves are strong in the wide areas of defence.

However, with Bertrand spending several years in the Premier League, winning a Champions League as well as playing for Chelsea, it may be an upgrade for Nuno and his team.

The full-back has been ever-present for the Saints this season as they are looking to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Bertrand started his career at Gillingham before being snatched up by Chelsea as a 15-year-old.

After progressing through the Blue’s well known academy, the defender joined AFC Bournemouth on loan.

It appeared that Bertrand might struggle to get a game at Chelsea with another seven loan moves to clubs around the country.

After finally making a name for himself at Chelsea, Bertrand was awarded a start in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich.

The winner of an FA Cup, Europa League and a Champions League suggest that this might be an upgrade for Wolves.

In 2015, Bertrand made his loan move to Southampton permanent with a reported £10 million fee being paid to Chelsea.

The defender has been a constant figure at St Mary’s which has even seen him capture the eye of England, as well as a host of clubs in the Premier League.

He has made 19 caps for England since 2012. With his performances this season putting him within touching distance on the plane to Russia.
