Brighton boss unaware of QPR interest in defender

Brighton and Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton has claimed that is he unaware of interest from Queens Park Rangers for defender Uwe Hunemeier.

Speaking to the Brighton and Hove Independent, Hughton spoke about Hunemeier’s time at the club:

“There’s nothing I can say about that at the moment, that’s news to me.

“What I will speak about is what Uwe has given us over this period of time. “It’s been very difficult particularly this season and last season for him to get the games he would like or want, simply because of the form of Shane (Duffy) and Lewis (Dunk). Not only their form but neither of them have gone through a spell of injury, so have very much cemented their place.

“Uwe from the moment he came has been excellent for us. He trains well every single day and is a valued member of the squad and what we’re doing.

“It’s not just about the 11 who play, it’s about the squad, it’s about training and he’s good trainer.

“Whatever happens with Uwe, he’s been wonderful for me personally and for this club.”

Hunemeier joined Brighton from Paderborn 07 back in 2015. The 6’2 defender was educated by Borussia Dortmund before going on and making five appearances for the first team.

A spell at Energie Cottbus followed him leaving his hometown club. The defender scored 10 goals in 78 appearances before earning a move to Paderborn.

This was the stage he needed to capture the attention of newly appointed Brighton manager Hughton who snapped him up in a deal worth £2 million.

Having been a part of the Brighton squad that were promoted to the Premier League last season, Hunemeier knows what it takes to get out of the Sky Bet Championship. A skill and piece of knowledge that QPR fans will be hoping to see since their relegation from the Premier League in 2013.
