The FA contact Middlesbrough and Millwall over pitch invasion

The FA has contacted both Middlesbrough and Millwall in regards to a pitch invasion at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday evening.

A number of Middlesbrough fans ran onto the pitch at the full time whistle after they managed to guarantee a Play Off spot. Boro beat fellow Play Off chasers Millwall, and won the game 2-0 thanks to goals from Britt Assombalonga and Jonny Howson either side of half-time.

The club had specifically requested that supporters stay in their seats following the game, and displayed numerous signs and messages around the ground to prevent this. Additionally, an announcement was made over the PA system to tell fans to remain in the stands.

The FA has contacted both clubs to get their view on the incident before any punishment, fine or bans are handed out to any of the few hundreds fans who made their way onto the field.

Pitch invasions are reviewed individually by the FA as opposed to a universal punishment given to all incidents, and it is unclear as to whether any further action will be taken.

The majority Middlesbrough fans who went onto the pitch headed towards the away fans in the East stand, and it is reported that amongst a few choice words, bottles were thrown. Police had to stand on the pitch to prevent fans from clashing.

Police did make arrests on Saturday evening after the game, but it is not known whether or not they were linked to the pitch invasion itself.

After the win Middlesbrough are in 5th place with one game left to play. In the Play Off semi-finals, they could play one of three teams: Cardiff City, Fulham or Aston Villa.
