Last night, Mick McCarthy agreed a deal with the Club that will see him cut short his contract and leave Portman Road with immediate effect.
The Town boss was due to stay in charge until his contract runs out at the end of the season but following discussions between Mick and Club owner Marcus Evans, it has been agreed that tonight’s game against Barnsley will be Mick’s final one in Blues’ dug-out.
“I spoke with Marcus at the weekend and we agreed that it was in the best interests for me, the players and the Club that I move on now,” Mick told the Club website.
“I said I would see the season out but it’s been a new experience and it’s not one I have been enjoying to be honest.
“I have continued to do my job to the best of my ability but there is something missing and I’m not comfortable with that.
“I have had a great time here and worked with some great people and to all those who have given me wonderful support over the last five and a half years – and there are many – I want to put on record my personal thanks.
“The players here can look forward to a new challenge with whoever comes in and I want to wish them, the staff and the Club the best of fortunes.
“I’ll also be looking forward to a new challenge elsewhere. I’ve still got a lot of football in me.”
Town’s assistant manager, Terry Connor, will also be leaving the Club having terminated his contract early as well.
Here is how Ipswich Town fans reacted to the news of Mick McCarthy’s early departure:
Mick has been a bloody good servant to #itfc – Whatever you say, you would've sung 'Super Mick' at one point. Remember the good times, look back on his time with fondness, wish him well and move on…

Do not have any sympathy for this man. Earnt at least £5m out of this club. Never beaten our rivals. Never won an FA Cup tie. Without doubt served up the worst football seen in our blue and white. An egotistical, overhyped manager that somehow is a name in football. #itfc

Ignoring the unentertaining football and fall outs with the fans. Thank you for the memories Mick and taking us from relegation to the play offs 💙 #ITFC

Seen so many "experts" saying Town fans didn't deserve McCarthy, grass isn't greener etc etc. Managers come & go! Fans remain constant. No man bigger than the club. MM was the right man when he came in. He Isn't anymore. Simple as that! #itfc

So sad it ended this way. Mick announced he was going, but that wasn't enough for many. A sad reflection. Best of luck to Mick and TC. Sorry we weren't able to give you a round of applause #itfc

Goodbye Mick, thanks for you first 3 seasons but good riddance to the arrogant, rude, belligerent old bastard we’ve had to put up with for the last 18 months or so. #ITFC

Glad the McCarthy reign ended with a win, and have far more good memories than bad from his 5.5 years.
Whilst it was time to go, I wish Mick well, and wish some of our fans would leave with him as embarrass the club with their attitude.
Onwards and upwards #ITFC

– Worst attendances in 60+ years
– Never won a FA Cup Tie
– Never won a DerbyI could go on…..I still find it hard to believe some #itfc fans were happy with the rubbish being served up, the club was desperate for a change and be excited we’ve finally got one.
Up the town🚜
