Report and Reactions: Coventry beaten as Glovers find their six appeal

Before kickoff it was a fixture that saw play-off chasing Coventry City hoping to consolidate a top-7 place pitted against a Yeovil outfit looking to hit out from the bottom third of the table. At the final whistle, it was roles reversed.

When I say roles reversed I mean that in terms of that old cliché that you’d not be able to tell which team was the play-off chasers as Yeovil ran out very comfortable 6-2 winners at the Ricoh Arena.

Match report: Coventry City 2 – 6 Yeovil Town

The damage was done in the opening throes of the game, with the Glovers finding a snug fit to be 3-0 up after just 15 minutes. First to score was Alex Fisher, his relatively easy goal (5′) putting the visitors on the front foot.

After coming close four minutes later through Lewis Wing, Yeovil stretched their lead with Francois Zoko (11′) profiting after Wing caught the home side’s Michael Doyle in possession, steamed forward and played the powerful Ivorian Zoko in on goal.

Four minutes later, Fisher (15′) hit his second of the game to give the Glovers what would normally be a ‘game over, go home’ 3-0 lead. However, with 75 minutes of the game left to play, there was plenty of opportunities for the home side to mount a comeback.

Both sides continued to press and Yeovil, in particular, continued to look threatening. Coventry came close through Maxime Biamou (36′) before Yeovil’s Fisher netting a third time (40′) only to be pulled back for offside.

The game went in to the half-time break with a 3-0 scoreline, courtesy of Fisher and Zoko’s goals. Coventry boss Mark Robins made a change in goal for the second-half, replacing Lee Burge with Liam O’Brien.

Two minutes later Biamou (47′) pulled the Sky Blues back in the game, netting after the home side had pinned visitors Yeovil back. Determination from Coventry began to fashion half-chances but it was Yeovil who stretched their lead further through Zoko (55′) who muscled his way through to net Yeovil’s fourth goal of the afternoon.

4-1 is a scoreline that would close out any game, but Coventry pulled another one back through Biamou (68′) whose 25-yard thunderbolt would have beaten any keeper. The 251 travelling fans would have been forgiven worrying about a Coventry comeback, yet reassured when Sam Sturridge (80′) restored their three goal advantage.

There was still enough time for Yeovil to round it up to half-a-dozen when Sturridge (90′) scored his second of the game to leave Yeovil Town more than worthy winners.
