West Ham United line up £4 million move for Aston Villa loanee

West Ham are lining up a £4 million summer move for Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, according to the Mirror.

The 25-year-old shot stopper is currently on loan at Championship side Aston Villa but Manchester United are keen to offload him on a permanent basis in the summer.

Aston Villa want to sign him but his long-term future at Villa Park could depend on whether they are promoted to the Premier League this season or not. They will now face competition from West Ham for his signature.

West Ham are looking for a new goalkeeper for next season with Joe Hart returning to Manchester City at the expiry of his loan. They see Sam Johnstone as an ideal replacement.

Johnstone knows West Ham boss David Moyes from when the Scottish boss managed Manchester United. He started his career with the Red Devils but has never broken into the first-team at Old Trafford.

He has gained plenty of first-team action on various loan spells away. These have included short stints at Oldham Athletic, Scunthorpe United, Walsall, Yeovil Town, Doncaster Rovers, Preston North End and now Aston Villa.

Johnstone has been on loan at Villa since January 2017 and has been impressive for them. Steve Bruce is keen on bringing him in on a permanent basis. However, with a Premier League side also showing an interest, it may be difficult for them to sign him now.
