Middlesbrough and Aston Villa battle it out for Premier League defender

Middlesbrough and Aston Villa are both interested in signing West Bromwich Albion defender Craig Dawson, as per a report by HITC Sport.

The Championship duo are both being linked with the Premier League defender as they look to bolster their squads for next season.

With it looking like West Brom are going to be relegated from the top flight, they may look to offload some players to cut down their wage bill. This has left both Middlesbrough and Aston Villa monitoring the situation of Craig Dawson.

Both sides are in the Play-Off places and may see Dawson as an ideal signing, should they get promotion to the Premier League.

The 27 year-old has established himself as a top flight defender and would be a very shrewd signing by either Villa or Boro. He has played over 150 games for West Brom and can operate as either a right-back or centre-back.

Middlesbrough boss Tony Pulis knows him very well from managing him at West Brom. He will be looking to put his own stamp on his newly inherited Boro squad in the summer and being linked with Dawson is no surprise.

Aston Villa, on the other hand, will apparently rival Boro for his signature. They were in great form but have lost their last two games. This has left some doubting their promotion credentials but they are still in a very promising position and are still in serious contention for a promotion under Steve Bruce.

Dawson, who has also previously played for Rochdale, will be a man in demand in the summer.
