Aston Villa boss sets minimum 18-point promotion target

Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce believes that his side will need to collect at least 18 points from a remaining 24 to have any chance of winning automatic promotion to the English Premier League according to Birmingham Live.

The Midlands outfit currently occupy fourth place in the Sky Bet Championship table and sit seven points adrift of Cardiff City in second who boast a game in hand over the men in claret and blue.

Villa’s three-match winning run was abruptly ended by a shock 3-1 home defeat to Queens Park Rangers in midweek and their hopes of winning promotion via the automatic route suffered a further blow on Saturday evening as lowly Bolton Wanderers grabbed a 1-0 victory over Bruce’s men at a snowy Macron Stadium.

Commenting after his side’s latest defeat, Villa boss Bruce has not yet given up on catching second placed Cardiff City providing that his side collect at least 18 points from their last eight matches.

“We are probably going to need to win six of our last eight, but it is possible” Bruce told Birmingham Live.

“We can’t give up.

“I am just disappointed that we have given ourselves a wonderful opportunity and our last two performances in particular have not been up to the standard of a week ago.”

“It is not over yet. That is for sure. We can’t give up. We just have to get on with it.”

Aston Villa have three winnable fixtures coming up against Hull City (away), Reading (home) and Norwich City (away) before having home advantage against Cardiff City when the promotion-chasing pair go head-to-head on Tuesday 10 April.
