Five Sunderland players Championship clubs should cherry pick if relegated

Marc Wilson

30-year-old Wilson signed up to the Wearsiders this season on a free transfer from Premier League side Bournemouth. With Sunderland’s position at the moment, and should it not improve, then it is highly unlikely that the 25-cap Republic of Ireland central defender will want to ply his trade in League One. Wilson has only featured 14 times for Sunderland this season, playing just 1,168 minutes.

The last time he featured in a squad for the Black Cats was when playing as a defensive midfielder against Cardiff City in mid-January, a 4-0 loss. Since then he’s not featured in the matchday squad for ten consecutive games, these being part of 17 games where he’s not featured since his arrival from Bournemouth on transfer deadline day on August 31 last year. Again, a drop to the third-tier of football, when combined with likely wages, would indicate a move away from the north-east club should relegation be confirmed.

Brian Oviedo

The 39-cap Costa Rican international arrived at the Stadium of Light near the end of the winter 2017 transfer window, coming in from Everton for a fee of around £1.8 million. His arrival wasn’t enough to see Sunderland preserve their Premier League status. Since the drop from England’s top-tier, Oviedo has found himself in a Championship relegation fight.

So far in this relegation fight, the 28-year-old left-back has featured 28 times for Sunderland, 26 of these appearances being starts. In these games he has scored twice, the last time in a 1-1 draw with Millwall earlier this month, as well as providing five assists, including two in a 3-3 draw with Middlesbrough. His international pedigree alone would mean that he’d be unwilling to suffer a second successive relegation and a season in a third-tier competition.

Joel Asoro

Asoro arrived at Sunderland from IF Bromma Under-19s, initially playing for the Black Cat’s Under-18s. He was promoted to the first team squad at the start of the 2016/17 Premier League campaign, a campaign that ended with a relegation to the Championship. Since then the rated youngster has featured 20 times in the Championship, scoring two goals and providing two assists.

Goals are what Ghanaian/Swede Asoro has in him, that much is evident. The 11-cap Sweden Under-21 international might have just the single goal at that level but has 12 in 17 appearances at Under-17 level and eight in ten appearances at Under-16 level. He netted three times in 23 appearances for Sunderland’s Under-23s, with these performances catching the eye. Potential and promise alone will mean that he’ll be wanting to play at a higher level than League One.
