CHAMPIONSHIP: Five things we learnt from this weekend’s action

There was an action packed weekend of football in the Sky Bet Championship, here are some of the talking points.

1) Wolves have not run away with the title.

Despite what many people believe, the Sky Bet Championship’s title race appears to have a few twists and turns yet to come. Nuno’s Wolves currently sit just three points ahead of Neil Warnock’s Cardiff City who appear to have been slowly catching the runaway leaders. Despite a dominant victory away at Leeds in the week, Wolves traveled to Villa Park knowing that a win would see them maintain their lead. Despite Diogo Jota cancelling out Albert Adomah’s opener, goals from James Chester, Lewis Grabban and Birkir Bjarnason showed that there was still time for somebody to challenge Wolves’ dominance.

2) Millwall for the play-offs?

At the start of the season, nobody would have expected Neil Harris’ men to be within touching distance of the Sky Bet Championship. Newly promoted Millwall would perhaps be happy to retain their status as a Sky Bet Championship side, however their recent form has seen them shoot up the league table. The Lions have not tasted defeat in the league since New Years Day, with their run since elevating them towards the top six. Harris’ side cut the gap to just six points after picking up a very respectable 1-0 win at home to Brentford on Saturday with George Saville notching inside the first minute.

3) Derby really hate this time of year

Despite picking up a well earned point on the road at local rivals Nottingham Forest on Sunday, Derby will believe that it was two points dropped in their quest for automatic promotion. Forest didn’t register a single shot on target at the City Ground with Derby dominating the stats. The Rams haven’t won since the start of February and have dropped from 2nd down to 5th in recent weeks.
