Leeds United part ways with Christiansen

It all started so well for Thomas Christiansen at Elland Road in a cavalcade of sparkling football. Now, after six months in charge it has ended with club and the affable Spaniard parting ways.

The 44-year-old came to Elland Road as a left-field choice after 52 games in charge of Cypriot side APOEL Nicosia, including a successful Europa League campaign. Many, if any, had heard of him before his appointment. Yet he won the crowd over, initially at least, with his calm and assured manner.

However, it is a result-driven business is football and the former Barcelona striker was delivering results in only fits and starts. Fits and starts isn’t good enough, and that proved to be the case with Phil Hay breaking the news of Christiansen’s demise on his personal Twitter feed (below).

Christiansen’s departure leaves sees him part company with the club in a not-overly-disastrous 10th place in the Sky Bet Championship table on 44 points. The Whites are just seven points shy of the final play-off place currently held by Bristol City who have 51 points and a five goal better difference.

In a way his position at Elland Road was looking increasingly precarious after the last two games played at home. In each of this brace of heavy defeats, the Whites shipped four goals in heavy losses to Millwall (3-4) and Cardiff City (1-4) and in each game a player was dismissed before half-time.

Red cards are becoming something of the norm at Leeds United since the turn of the year with Leeds having only played one game without finishing with 10 men – that being the 0-0 draw against Hull City on Tuesday evening.

Christiansen’s departure from Elland Road leaves the Whites looking for a manager to now take them through to the end of the season, but in the short -term to pick up and put back together a crumbling play-off challenge.
