Barnsley in talks with Nottingham Forest to sign experienced defender

Barnsley are in talks with Nottingham Forest over the signing of central defender Matt Mills, according to Leon Wobschall of the Yorkshire Post.

The Reds are in the market for a new defender before the 11.00 deadline following the sale of club captain Angus MacDonald to Yorkshire rivals Hull City.

Mills has started just once in the clubs last seven games in all competitions and it is believed that new manager Aitor Karanka is willing to let him leave following the loan signing of Tobias Figueiredo yesterday.

Forest have the joint third worst defensive record in the whole of the Championship, conceding 46 goals in just 29 games. The former Boro boss is keen to revamp his defence to help turn around the clubs leaky back line.

The 31-year old is out of contract at the end of the season and Forest will sanction the departure of Mills before the deadline to avoid losing him on a free transfer in the summer.

In a three-year spell at Reading between 2009 and 2011, Mills established himself as one of the Championships most consistent defenders. In his final season with the Royals he captained the side to a play off final, only to lose 4-2 to Swansea City.

In the summer of 2011, Mills left Reading to join Leicester City on a four-year deal. His spell at Leicester did not go to plan and after making 25 appearances he joined Bolton Wanderers the following year.

He made 87 appearances for Wanderers before joining Nottingham Forest on a free transfer. Mills has fallen down the pecking order at Forest and a move to Barnsley could help reinvigorate his career.
