Sunderland now looking to sign alternate Sheffield Wednesday striker

Sunderland have switched their focus and are now looking to sign Sheffield Wednesday’s Atdhe Nuhiu according to a report from journalist Alan Nixon.

Earlier in the day there were reports that Sunderland had made an offer to sign Jordan Rhodes from Sheffield Wednesday on loan. They were hoping that with Rhodes being in poor form that they might be able to persuade Wednesday to let him leave but it appears that won’t be happening. Even in a loan deal, his wages are far too big for the Black Cats to afford at this time and while they would still like to complete this move, it is unlikely.

And so Sunderland are now turning their attention to another Wednesday striker who has been out of favour. They are now interested in signing Nuhiu who has said in the press that he would be open to a move that would see him play football on a more regular basis. He has struggled to get a place in the first team due to the likes of Gary Hooper, Rhodes and Lucas Joao being ahead of him though he has been playing more often since the appointment of Jos Luhukay as head coach.

Now it remains to be seen if Wednesday will sell Nuhiu. While he has been out of favour this season, he seems to be well liked by Luhukay and has been getting a lot more time in the first team as of late. But with his contract reportedly expiring in the summer, they may sell now to make sure they get a fee.
