Mansfield Town are in for a Penney

Mansfield Town have signed Matt Penney on loan from Sheffield Wednesday until the end of the season as confirmed by the club website.

The 19-year-old midfielder, who can also play in defence, is seen as a talented prospect in the Sheffield Wednesday academy and it is believed he will be able to break into their first team in the next few years. However that won’t be possible this season with the Owls looking over their shoulder at the relegation zone so he needed to head back out on loan to get that all important first team experience.

And he won’t be travelling that far as he has headed the relatively short distance to Mansfield where he will play for the rest of the season. This is the Stags’ first signing of transfer deadline and the fans can still be excited as the website reveals that the club are working on another deal they hope will be completed by the end of the day.

His new head coach Steve Evans said: “Matt is a young man who will bring a lot to our group.”

“He plays very stylishly in either wide area after being developed at Wednesday from the attacking full-back position.”

“The lad is young, very talented and in agreement with myself was previous Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal who stated that young Matt was more than ready to make a great impression at first team level.”

“We are grateful to Sheffield Wednesday for selecting our approach for Matt in preference to at least six or seven League One and Two clubs.”

“Again I must acknowledge the work of Carolyn Radford [chief executive officer] who worked tirelessly on this over last weekend.”
