Celtic could turn to Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper

Celtic could make a shock loan move for Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Kieron Westwood, as per a report by HITC Sport.

The 33 year-old has been out injured and is nearing being back in contention. However, he may find it hard to retain his place due to the form of the standing number one Joe Wildsmith.

Celtic are in desperate need of a new goalkeeper after their first-choice ‘keeper Craig Gordon has been ruled out with a long-term injury. This has left the Scottish champions scrambling around over the past 24 hours looking for a stand-in goalkeeper.

They have been linked with Motherwell’s Trevor Carson and Dundee’s Scott Bain. However, a move for Carson was turned down and Bain will be hard to sign due to him currently on loan at Hibernian. This has left Celtic pondering a late loan move for Sheffield Wednesday’s Kieron Westwood, but it would be a race against time to get a deal done before the 11pm deadline.

Westwood has been one of the best goalkeepers in the Championship over the past couple of seasons for Sheffield Wednesday and it would be a surprise to see him leave them today. The Republic of Ireland international joined them in 2014 from Sunderland and has been their number one ever since.

The former Manchester City, Carlisle United, Coventry City and Sunderland goalkeeper would be some coup by Celtic. However, a move would be unlikely due to him still being a key player for Sheffield Wednesday. Anything can happen on deadline day though.
