Sunderland make ambitious loan bid for Sheffield Wednesday striker

Sunderland are making an ambitious bid to sign Sheffield Wednesday’s Jordan Rhodes on loan according to a report from journalist Alan Nixon.

The 27-year-old striker, who has been capped by Scotland 14 times, signed for the Owls on transfer deadline day last year and ended up being one of the most dramatic deals of the day as the paperwork was done only just before the deadline and the transfer was almost cancelled when it was thought it was late. But it doesn’t seem to have been worth it. Rhodes has struggled to hit form while at Hillsborough and hasn’t been the goal machine many hoped for when he signed last year.

This has given hope to other teams that they might be able to sign him for themselves and be the team where Rhodes finds his form again. Sunderland are the latest team and have made a bid to sign Rhodes on loan with just hours to go in the transfer window. They are desperate for a striker after they lost both Lewis Grabban and James Vaughan left the club this month and they need a goal scorer to make sure they don’t get relegated for a second season in a row.

The main problem with this deal happening though seems to be due to money. Sunderland haven’t got much to play with at the moment and they would require Wednesday to still pay some of Rhodes’ wages should he move to the Stadium of Light. This may be a bridge too far for the Owls who may not want to let a striker who could hit top form at any moment go if they are still paying for him.
