Sunderland set to land Leeds United goalkeeper

Sunderland are set to sign Leeds United goalkeeper Andy Londergan, according to the journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Black Cats have been linked with the experienced goalkeeper for a while in this transfer window and finally look set to conclude a deal today.

Leeds boss Thomas Christiansen confirmed after his side’s 0-0 draw last night against Hull City that Lonergan is expected to make the move to the North-East today.

Lonergan, who is 34 years-old, is a vastly experienced goalkeeper who will be a useful acquisition for the Black Cats. He has made over 300 career appearances. He made the move to Leeds in the summer but a move to Elland Road has not worked out for him.

He will now provide competition for Sunderland ‘keepers Jason Steele and Robin Ruiter. They have been leaking goals this season and have been after a new goalkeeper this month to try and limit the number of goals they concede.

Sunderland are no doubt in a relegation battle but the experience of Lonergan in goal could give them a boost. He is not the only signing that Chris Coleman will be hoping to complete, the former Wales boss is also after a striker and potentially an attacking midfielder.

Lonergan looks to be the first through the door though. The former Preston North End, Bolton Wanderers, Fulham and Wolves shot stopper will join Sunderland today unless something goes wrong. Sunderland fans will be happy to see them trying to get deals over the line but will be wishing they had done it earlier.
