North East rivals set to go head-to-head for Leicester midfielder

Middlesbrough and Sunderland are set to go head-to-head in the race to sign Leicester City midfielder Andy King on loan, according to the Mail Online transfer blog.

The report states that both Sheffield United and Bristol City have enquired about the availability of the Wales international, but it is Boro and Sunderland who will look to sign him.

Boro are in the market for a new midfielder before tomorrow’s deadline following the departure of Adam Forshaw (Leeds) and the imminent departure of Adléne Guedioura (Nottingham Forest).

Adam Clayton has also been linked with a move away from the Riverside this month, leaving just Jonny Howson, Grant Leadbitter and Lewis Baker as the clubs only midfield options.

Sunderland are also looking to bring in an extra midfielder before the 11pm deadline tomorrow. Didier Ndong is set to join Watford for the rest of the season and manager Chris Coleman is desperate to add to his squad to help avoid a second successive relegation.

King is set to be allowed to leave the King Power on loan with the 29-year old falling down the pecking order since the arrival of Claude Puel. Wilfred Ndidi, Vicente Iborra, Adrien Silva and Daniel Amartey are all currently ahead of King in the battle for the midfield spots at Leicester.

The 44 time capped Wales international has spent the entirety of his professional career at Leicester City. He is the clubs all time highest scoring midfielder, with 61 goals in 374 appearances.

He is also the only player in the Premier League era to have won League One, Championship and Premiership title with the same team in the Premier League era.
