Reading have £8m bid rejected by Preston for in demand striker

Reading have had an £8m bid rejected by Preston North End by highly sought after striker Jordan Hugill, according to Ed Aarons of the Guardian.

Reading have struggled for goals this season and are the joint 5th lowest scorers in the entire division. Last season’s top scorer Yann Kermogant has had a campaign ravaged by injury, leaving Jon Dadi Bodvarsson as the clubs only out-and-out striker.

Jaap Stam has been chasing a new prolific striker since the beginning of last summer and despite being linked with moves for the likes of Nelson Oliveira and Hugill, he is yet to find success in his search.

Hugill has eighteen months left to run on his current deal at North End and handed in a transfer request last summer in order to force a move away from Deepdale.

As reported by the Football Insider earlier in the month, Leeds are also interested in a move for Hugill but it seems manager Alex Neil is determined to keep the 25-year old beyond this month.

Hugill began his professional career at Port Vale, after spells at numerous Non-League sides, most notably Whitby Town. Before making an appearance for the first team, he was loaned out to Conference side Gateshead. He scored 5 goals in 7 games, in what was a break through loan spell for Hugill.

Shortly after his return to Vale, he made his first appearance in a 3-0 victory over Crawley. He went on to play 20 times for the Valiants, scoring 4 goals.

His impressive performances earned him a move to Preston in 2014. Before establishing himself in the North End first team, he had loan spells at Tranmere and Hartlepool. At Tranmere he scored one goal in six games, whilst at Hartlepool he fired in four in eight.

It was last season where Hugill really made a name for himself. He scored 13 goals in the Championship last season, making him one of the most sought after strikers in the league.

Hugill has continued his impressive goal scoring form this season, firing in eight league goals so far this season.
