Aston Villa, Reading, Aston Villa defender Tommy Elphick to join fellow Championship side on loan

Aston Villa defender Tommy Elphick to join fellow Championship side on loan

Aston Villa defender Tommy Elphick is set to leave the club on loan before the transfer deadline, according to the Sun Journalist Alan Nixon.

Fellow Championship side Reading looks to apparently be his most likely destination with the Royals keen to get a deal over the line as soon as possible.

The Royals have had a tough start to the season under Jaap Stam so far. There was a lot of expectation of going for another promotion push after losing in the Play-Off final last season to Huddersfield Town but they have found it hard to reach the same heights.

They find themselves languishing in the lower half of the table and one of their main problems has been leaking too many goals. They will be hoping that the possible loan signing of Tommy Elphick will strengthen their backline.

The 30 year-old defender has fallen down the pecking order at Aston Villa this season and they are eager to offload him in this window. He has found it hard to break into their starting eleven due to the form of James Chester, John Terry and Chris Samba.

Elphick has bags of Championship experience from his time as captain of AFC Bournemouth when they won promotion to the Premier League in 2015. He will be a useful signing for Reading if they can get the deal done. It is expected that there will be other Championship clubs showing an interest in him so Reading will have to act fast to get this one over the line.
