Lincoln City boss praises team’s work ethic as Imps close in on Wembley

Lincoln City boss Danny Cowley praised his side’s performance as the Imps moved to be ninety minutes away from a tie at Wembley.

It was no easy task for Cowley’s Lincoln side as they fell behind twice to visiting Peterborough United, but a resilient Lincoln side recovered well before Harry Anderson and Matt Green added late goals to ensure progression to the Checkatrade Trophy semi-finals.

Lincoln boss Cowley voluntarily watched the game from the stands, having been sent off in the previous home game against Notts County, but had already predicted that Anderson would score the winner.

“I said to Nicky [via a radio headset] with about 20 minutes to go ‘tell Harry’s he’s going to score the winner’,” said Cowley.

“I just wanted him to keep going and keep believing. He’s got so much energy and has such a great work ethic that I just wanted to keep him in the game.

“I just had a feeling. It felt like one of those special nights. When you have those special nights, special things have to happen. And for Harry to score against his old club was exactly that.”

With Peterborough desperate to get back into the game they committed men to attack, however the Posh were caught lacking numbers in defence as Green raced from the halfway line before slotting home much to the delight of the home support.

“It’s not football players that win you matches, it’s’ people and we showed a huge amount of resilience, grit and character.” Cowley said.

“At 70 minutes, we were on the floor physically. So for them to find an extra level, dig as deep as they did and come out with the win makes it a really pleasing evening for us.”
