Preston striker Eoin Doyle could be on his way back to Oldham Athletic on loan, according to Lancashire Post.
Eoin Doyle could be on his way back to Oldham Athletic on loan even though they might have to wait to play him again.
The Irishman scored 14 goals in 21 appearances for the League One outfit in the first half of the season.
But due to illness Doyle was unable to appear in the last few games of his loan spell at the club. The illness is likely to keep him out for another few weeks but Oldham still want to take Doyle back ready for when he has finally recovered.
Oldham are desperate for Doyle’s firepower, having been dragged back into a relegation scrap. His last game for the club was on December 16, when Doyle scored in a 1-1 draw against Doncaster. Since then, Oldham have failed to win in seven games in the league and have scored only four times.
But his goals there caught the eye of a number of clubs and had he not been taken ill, there would have been quite a battle for his services this month.
Wellens believes that someone else needs to step up in the mean time to help get Oldham out of their rut.
“We’re going to try and do Doyle, but there’s no point everybody saying ‘get Doyle’ because he’s not even fit until the middle of March,” he told MEN Sport.
“It’s hugely frustrating that we haven’t signed a striker as I wanted one here on January 1. In the games against Shrewsbury, Charlton and Peterborough we’ve had plenty of chances to win it but didn’t take them.
“The league position doesn’t help us. We’ve been after a player for a few weeks but we’ll probably lose out to Rotherham because they’re in and around it near the play-offs and we are where we are.”
