Rowett wants Derby County trio to leave on loan

Derby County manager Gary Rowett has informed the Derby Telegraph that Jonathan Mitchell, Jamie Hanson and Mason Bennett may soon leave the club on loan. He clearly stated all three are part of his long-term plans, but for now, they need game time.

The Rams are firmly involved in the race to return to the Premier League after a prolonged absence, meaning the current team is rather settled. That makes the likes of Mitchell, Hanson and Bennett, plus many others, sat waiting for their chance. Rowett admits that Derby are in a great situation regarding their strong squad, but those in reserve deserve to play right now given their attitude in training. Results though mean those currently playing won’t be dropped any time soon.

Between them, the trio is focus has barely featured this season, and Rowett acknowledges that, and is open to a temporary move away from Pride Park,

“I think if you look at Jonny Mitchell, Mason Bennett, Jamie Hanson – all three of those players are in scenarios where they’ve done really well in training, their attitudes have been fantastic and they probably deserve to be playing more minutes, but because the team is performing well, it’s difficult to give them that.

“But for the long-term of the club and the long-term of those players, at some point, you have to think can we get another option in until the end of the season, which allows them to go and see if they can flourish in the last three months of the season, which means they can be a really strong option at the start of the (next) season?

“And that’s the genuine truth – if we didn’t see those players as part of the future, we’d be trying to sell them at this point and let them move on – but we do. They’ve done really, really well.”

The club are looking to sign cover for first-choice Scott Carson, who recently signed a new contract, to enable Mitchell to move on. Hanson and Bennett have had their injuries this season and need a run of games to truly get back to their best. A temporary stint appears most likely to help them achieve that.
