Leeds United star defender agent rubbishes transfer rumours

He was dismissed as yet another cheap import when it was mentioned that Leeds United were bringing in a defender on loan from Italian Serie A side Torino. Then fans saw Pontus Jansson play.

His half season at Elland Road in the early part of the 2016/17 Sky Bet Championship campaign, arriving in early August. His strength at the back and the composure he showed made him an instant fan favourite and ended with him becoming a member of the  Sky Bet Championship’s Team of the Season.

The following February the Whites announced that they’d be taking up the option of converting the initial loan to a full transfer at the end of that season. This proved to be the case as the big Swede joined United at the opening of the summer 2017 window in July.

He’s played 61 games for Leeds since first appearing in a 1-0 defeat to Huddersfield at Elland Road, scoring five goals and adding three assists. But his form and consistency has seen him linked with all manner of moves away from Elland Road – the most high-profile one being to Premier League Southampton.

The big-money transfer of Virgil Van Dyke to Liverpool has raised the tempo of this rumour-mongering, with many say that Jansson is almost destined to end up at St Marys. However, his agent Martin Dahlin says that nothing could be further from the truth.

Speaking to Swedish publication fotbollskanalen, Dahlin said that whilst there is purported interest from Southampton, stretching back to last summer, Leeds United fans have nothing to worry about.

Dahlin said of any eyes cast Pontus Jansson’s way that, “interest in Pontus is great, but he is fully focused on taking up Leeds in the Premier League. Otherwise, I have no comments about this.”

Janssn’s next involvement for Leeds United comes tomorrow against Millwall in front of what promises to be another big crowd. The Whites will be hoping to exact revenge over the Lions, a 1-0 defeat at The Den sending United into a helter-skelter of results after an electrifying start to their campaign.
