Sunderland eyeing up move for Derby County striker

Sunderland are trying to sign Derby County striker Chris Martin, according to the Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

The Black Cats have turned their attentions to Martin with moves for Liverpool winger Ben Woodburn and Burnley striker Jonathan Walters both hitting stumbling blocks.

Martin is being linked with a move away from Derby in this transfer window having fallen down the pecking order at Gary Rowett’s high flying Rams. He has found it hard to get into the team ahead of Matej Vydra, David Nugent and Sam Winnall. They have also now signed Cameron Jerome from Norwich City which frees up Martin for a move.

Reading have been linked with a move for him but Sunderland have now joined the race. It appears that any move for the 30 year-old will be a loan.

Sunderland are in desperate need of a striker with Lewis Grabban, who got 12 goals for them this season, was recalled by his parent club AFC Bournemouth. Their only two strikers now are the youngsters Josh Maja and Joel Asoro.

Chris Coleman has been trying to get some deals over the line in this window but has only managed to sign Chelsea defender Jake Clarke-Salter as of yet.

Chris Martin would be a decent coup for Sunderland if they can sign him. He is a proven goal scorer at this level and would give the Black Cats another option going forward. He spent last season on loan at Fulham and scored 10 goals for them in 30 appearances.

He has also bagged 62 goals in 156 games so far for Derby in his career which shows he would be a solid signing by Sunderland if they can bring him in.
