Sheffield Wednesday winger may get first league start of season at weekend

Sheffield Wednesday manager Jos Luhukay has hinted to the Sheffield Telegraph that Marco Matias may get his first league start of the season at the weekend.

Matias has been an outcast for the majority of the season. He has only played two games in the Sky Bet Championship this season but got a chance to start last night in the FA Cup Third Round Replay fixture against Carlisle United. And he took that chance, scoring the opening goal of the game and being one of the best players in the game as they cruised to a 2-0 win.

And Luhukay has said that after Matias’ impressive performance that he is considering including him in the team for Saturday’s match against Cardiff City. Being a Neil Warnock managed side, they will be very tough to break down but with Matias pace and clever runs, he might end up being a key player in that match.

Luhukay said: “I was happy both strikers scored,”

“It was important and gives them more confidence.”

“He was very dangerous and showed good speed. He scored a good goal.”

“He has not played much in the last weeks and months but Carlisle found it difficult to stop him.”

“Marco is a player with a lot of speed and can play in two or three positions. I have a player who I can maybe in the next games give him a chance to play.”

The game against Cardiff will take place on the 20th January, kicking off at 3pm.
