Cardiff beat Middlesbrough to signing of Serbian international from Liverpool

Cardiff City have today unveiled Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic as their second signing of the January transfer window. He makes the move to the Welsh Capital for the remainder of the campaign, including the play-offs if required.

Grujic, who has been handed the number 24 jersey by Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock, is in line to make his debut on Saturday night as Warnock returns to Sheffield to face Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough. Cardiff have beaten off other clubs for his signature.

Gazette Live recently reported that Middlesbrough were also keen on luring the player to the Riverside Stadium, with Tony Pulis seemingly a fan of the 21-year-old Serbian international.

Speaking to Mozzart Sport, Grujic, who last appeared for Liverpool in last month’s 5-1 Premier League victory away to Brighton & Hove Albion, believes this is a significant moment for him,

“This is perhaps the breakthrough moment of my career. I am aware that I’ve got a great chance, playing for the next six months in a big club.

“I want to thank Mr (Jurgen) Klopp for everything he’s done for me. He’s encouraged me many times over the last 18 months and I believe that I will justify his confidence.

“I hope I can get Cardiff to the Premier League.”

Grujic made the move to Anfield back in 2016 for a fee worth over £5million. He made an impression during his time at Red Star Belgrade of being a player with a bright future, and the Reds soon snapped him up. Since then, he has appeared eight times in the Premier League, making six appearances in all competitions this season.
