Sheffield United join race to sign out of favour Middlesbrough midfielder

Sheffield United have entered the race to sign out of favour Middlesbrough midfielder Adam Forshaw, according to The Telegraph.

As reported by the 72 earlier this month, the Blades’ promotion rivals Derby County and Aston Villa are also interested in Forshaw, as well as bottom of the table Sunderland.

Cardiff City are also thought to be keen on a loan deal for the 26-year old, who has started just five league games all season.

New Boro boss Tony Pulis is believed to be keen on trimming his squad this month to help fund new signings, and given Forshaw’s lack of involvement under Pulis he could one on the way out.

Forshaw finds himself behind a number of other midfielders in the pecking order under Pulis. Grant Leadbitter, Jonny Howson, Adelene Guadioura and Lewis Baker are all currently ahead of Forshaw in the pecking order.

Despite the Blades already bringing in two new midfielders this month in Ryan Leonard and Lee Evans, Chris Wilder is thought to be keen on strengthening his midfield even further. United have won just once in ten matches since Paul Coutts suffered a broken leg in November.

Forshaw progressed through the ranks of hometown club Everton. He appeared just once for the clubs first team before being loaned out to Brentford. After seven appearances at Griffin Park, he eventually signed for the club on a permanent basis.

He was a key figure in Brentford’s promotion the Championship in 2014, earning a spot in the League One team of the season. During his time at the club he scored 11 goals in 82 matches, before joining Wigan Athletic for a fee in the region of £2m.

He was at Wigan for just five months, joining current club Middlesbrough in January 2015. Forshaw has made 92 appearances for Boro and was part of the side which won promotion to the Premier League in 2016.
