Championship side Fulham may sell Tom Cairney to finance a move for Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle, according to the Chronicle Live.
Fulham were interested in signing Gayle in the summer but their attempts were rebuffed by the Magpies. However, they may try and bring in their top target this January if they sell Tom Cairney.
Cairney, who is Fulham’s captain, has been the subject of a move from West Bromwich Albion. The Premier League side have launched a bid of around £12 million for the midfielder.
The money that they gain from selling Cairney would provide them with the funds to sign Dwight Gayle, who has been on their watch list for a while now. Newcastle apparently value him at around £15 million.
Gayle has not played as many games as he would have liked for Newcastle this season and has only scored 3 goals in 20 appearances. He managed 23 league goals for them last season and was a key part in Rafa Benitze’s side who won the Championship title.
There are not many strikers in the Championship who are as prolific as Dwight Gayle at this level. If Fulham can sign him it would be one of the biggest coups in the transfer window. He would certainly offer them something different going forward and some goals to help them climb up the league.
It would come at a price though and losing Tom Cairney would be a big blow for the Cottagers. He has been a big player for them over the past couple of seasons but they will need to decide soon- Cairney or Gayle?
