Sheffield United complete signing of Charlton Athletic forward

Sheffield United have completed the signing of Charlton Athletic’s Ricky Holmes for an undisclosed fee as confirmed by the club website.

The Blades have had a longstanding interest in the 30-year-old forward having tried to sign him back in the summer following their promotion to the Sky bet Championship. But while they weren’t able to complete the deal back then, they returned to their interest when the January transfer window reopened and have now been able to sign Holmes with him penning a two-and-a-half year contract with the club.

Holmes has had a varied career after starting off in non-league football with Chelmsford City. Since then he has played for the likes of Barnet, Portsmouth and Northampton Town before signing for Charlton in 2016. He has been one of their better performers since the Addicks dropped down to Sky Bet League One but this move to Sheffield United gives him a great chance to play in a higher division.

Following the signing of Holmes, United head coach Chris Wilder said:

“I worked with Ricky previously and it is no secret that I’m an admirer of his ability,” said the United chief.

“He has something a little different and I’m confident that his best years are ahead of him. He completes the jigsaw of our incoming transfers and I must thank Paul Mitchell (head of recruitment) and Carl Shieber (head of football admin) for securing these deals early in the transfer window.”

Holmes could make his debut for Sheffield United on Saturday when they play Norwich City.
