Sunderland set to cancel flop signing’s contract

Sunderland are set to cancel Jack Rodwell’s contract according to a report from Chronicle Live.

After a poor spell with Manchester City, there was a lot of hope when the 26-year-old midfielder signed for Sunderland in 2014. However this has been a complete flop signing for the Black Cats as the player has struggled for form and with injuries during his three-and-a-half years with the club and since their relegation, he has barely played for them. He has only made three appearances for the first team and did get on the score sheet in the 2-1 loss to Sheffield United, but most of his playing time has come for the U23s in the Football League Trophy.

And while Rodwell told the press he was willing to play in defence to resurrect his career, it appears that Sunderland want to cut their losses and cancel his contract during the January transfer window. The midfielder gets a hefty wage packet every month and getting rid of him would be massively useful to the club as Chris Coleman aims to strengthen the squad as they look to avoid relegation from the Sky Bet Championship.

The only difficulty in cancelling Rodwell’s contract appears to be Rodwell himself. The former England international has 18 months left on his contract and it appears that he is happy to sit out that even though he won’t be getting much football if he stays. Now it is set to be a battle between player and club as Sunderland look to persuade the former Everton man to leave.
