Addicks could sign Blades midfielder in swap deal

Sheffield United midfielder Samir Carruthers could be drafted into a deal which will see the player join Charlton Athletic with Ricky Holmes moving in the opposite direction according to News Shopper.

Former England C international Holmes is believed to be set to join The Blades within days with the 30-year-old winger poised for a reunion with former boss Chris Wilder in South Yorkshire.

It has now been suggested that Charlton Athletic could be offered The Blades midfielder Carruthers as part of the deal with the player returning closer to his Islington birthplace. The 24-year-old has struggled to make an impact in the Sheffield United starting XI since joining the club from MK Dons 12 months ago while the player has long been wanted by The Addicks.

Carruthers started his career at Aston Villa but the midfielder struggled to make the grade at Villa Park and made just three senior appearances for the club.

In August 2014, the player joined MK Dons on a permanent basis following a successful youth loan at Stadium MK and Carruthers went on to play a starring role for the club, helping them to promotion to the Sky Bet Championship in 2014/2015.

Sheffield United are believed to have paid £250,000 to sign the midfielder last January but the player has failed to impress at Bramall Lane. Carruthers has made 30 appearances in total for The Blades however just eight of those outings have been starts as he has picked up an image as something of a bench-warmer.
