Scunthorpe United have signed Ivan Toney on loan from Newcastle United for the rest of the season as confirmed by the club website.
Toney is already a very familiar name to Scunthorpe fans as he had a loan spell with them last season. It would be a successful stint for the 21-year-old striker who would go on to score six goals in 15 appearances during that spell, being part of the team as they missed out on promotion after losing in the Sky Bet League One play-offs.
Since then Toney has gone out on loan again, this time heading to Lancashire where he played for Wigan, scoring four goals in 20 appearances. His parent club though decided to terminate that loan deal and that opened up a chance for him to return to Lincolnshire to play for Scunthorpe. Now he can fire them into the Sky Bet Championship after getting so close last season.
After signing, Toney said: “It’s a great club and there was disappointment last year in not winning the play-offs. Hopefully we can do better this season, and I can’t wait to get started.”
“The manager has played a big part. I know how he plays and how the team plays. Hopefully, this season is a positive one for us. There are still some of the same players and he’s made it stronger by bringing a few in. We’re looking forward to getting it going again and trying to get where we need to be.”
“Nobody wants that disappointment again, so we all want to push on now and go up to the Championship.”
