Brentford leading Aston Villa and Chelsea in race to sign young Irish forward

Brentford are leading Aston Villa and Chelsea in the race to sign Limerick’s Chiedozie Ogbene according to a report from Get West London.

The 20-year-old striker, who can also play on the wing, has been on the radar of Aston Villa since November but now more and more teams are starting to notice talent and want to be the team that gets him to cross the Irish Sea. And with his contract set to expire in a year, Limerick may be more willing to sell during this transfer window than they would at another time.

But while Aston Villa and Chelsea may have bigger reputations and academies which have produced more players, it is Brentford who are reportedly the most likely to sign the young forward. While Ogbene has been on trial with Chelsea recently and Villa have had a longstanding interest which goes back to at least November, there is perhaps a better chance of him breaking into the first team at Brentford which is currently giving them the edge in this race.

The signing of Ogbene isn’t one that will get the fans’ pulses racing, especially as he will probably be heading to their B team rather than the first team. But it would be a big statement by the Bees to be able to sign a player from under the noses of two teams that many would argue have a bigger reputation. It would also show the team are preparing for the future by signing  a player that could soon break into their first team.
