Millwall defender subject of January transfer, including from Southend

News At Den understands that Millwall club captain is the subject of interest from a number of clubs in the January transfer window. One of those is believed to be Sky Bet League One outfit Southend United, and Craig could leave the club in search for more regular first team football.

Craig is in his fourth spell with the club and may be about to leave for the fourth time. The 32-year-old has been restricted to just seven appearances since promotion in the Play-Off Final last season, with three of those seven clashes coming in cup games. James Meredith is currently the first choice in the left back department at The Den. Millwall may be prepared to let the experienced full back move on.

Whilst his manager, Neil Harris, has stated that he’d love for Craig to remain, he accepts that the player himself clearly wants to play more than he has done this season. He also stated that Southend are indeed in the hunt for the defender,

“I want Tony to stay at the football club, I’ve made that clear to him. He’s been talking to me and the club regarding extending his stay.

“He’s been frustrated by the lack of first team opportunities at the moment due to Mezza’s (Meredith) good form. He’s had to be patient and it’s testament to Tony that there has been interest from people that want to take him. It’s not just Southend, there has been a lot of interest in him.”

Craig played in the weekend 4-1 victory over Barnsley in the FA Cup, but is expected back on the bench this weekend when The Lions entertain Preston North End.
