Newport County manager reveals ideal FA Cup opponent after Leeds United upset

Newport County head coach Michael Flynn has told Wales Online that he wants Liverpool in the 4th Round of the FA Cup after they shockingly beat Leeds United 2-1 today.

Very few people expected Newport to get the win over Leeds today, especially as the Yorkshire club soundly beat them 5-1 at Elland Road in the First Round of the Carabao Cup earlier in the season. An upset seemed even more unlikely when early on in the match Gaetano Berardi puts Leeds ahead.

However in the second half Newport would put up a display to remember as they came from behind to cause the upset. The game was made level when Conor Shaughnessy put into his own goal and the Exiles sealed a famous win late on when Shawn McCoulsky headed in from a corner.

And now that Newport are in the hat for the 4th Round of the FA Cup, Flynn is thinking about who they’ll face next and he wants to play Liverpool, though he would enjoy any game that gave Newport a large amount of money.

He said: “It’s huge for the club and the city. We’ve had a lot of tough times but hopefully we’re going in the right direction and this shows it.”

“We’re in the fourth round now and – being a Liverpool fan – I’d love to get them at Anfield, but I’d take whatever makes the club the most money. Hopefully we get one of the big clubs away because the money will be huge for this football club, absolutely massive.”
