Pitman, Charlton Athletic interested in signing Portsmouth striker

Charlton Athletic interested in signing Portsmouth striker

Charlton Athletic are interested in signing Portsmouth’s Brett Pitman according to a report from journalist Alan Nixon.

The Addicks are doing good so far this season but are just falling short in their aims to get promoted from Sky Bet League One. They are currently 8th in the table and are just one point off Portsmouth in 6th place, so are planning to do anything they can to haul themselves into those play-off places. And that includes targeting players from their promotion rivals who have been doing very well for them.

The player they are targeting is currently contracted to the team they are chasing, Portsmouth. It is Pitman, a striker who has been one of the top players in League One this season after signing for them from Ipswich Town in 2017. He has scored 13 goals this season, making him the joint second highest scorer in the league. He is tied with on-loan Rotherham United striker Kieffer Moore and Oldham Athletic’s Eoin Doyle and just behind Peterborough United’s Jack Marriott who has netted 16 times.

The main difficulty will be trying to get a player who is doing so well for a team they are directly competing with. Portsmouth do not want to lose someone who has been scoring a lot of goals to them, especially if he ends up going to someone who will be competing with them for a place in the play-offs. But if Charlton are willing to pay up for Pitman, Portsmouth may risk selling him and get a new striker in his place.
