NEWS: Sunderland eyeing double deal for Middlesbrough midfielders

Sunderland manager Chris Coleman is reportedly eyeing a double deal for Middlesbrough midfielders Adam Clayton and Adam Forshaw, according to the Sunderland Echo, via the Northern Echo.

Coleman is expecting to be very busy in the January window with the club currently bottom of the league table and looking to stave off back to back relegation.

Clayton and Forshaw are yet to feature under new Middlesbrough boss Tony Pulis, and with Pulis revealing he would like to trim his squad, the pair may be available to leave the Riverside this month.

Jonny Howson, Grant Leadbitter, Adelene Guadioura and Lewis Baker are currently above the midfield pair in the pecking order at the moment, and may look for moves away in order to seek regular first team football.

Sunderland are desperate for midfield reinforcements, with Didier Ndong currently subject to interest from Premier League side Watford, as reported by The 72.

The Black Cats are also without the services of four first team midfielders. Lee Cattermole, Lyndon Gooch, Jack Rodwell and Darron Gibson are all sidelined with injuries, leaving a gaping hole in the middle of the midfield.

Sunderland will face stiff competition for the signature of Clayton, with numerous other Championship clubs interested in the 28-year-old. Promotion chasing trio Leeds United, Derby County and Sheffield United are all rumoured to be interested in signing the midfielder this month.

Both players were apart of the Boro squad which were promoted to the Premier League in 2015 and will bring a wealth of Championship experience to the Stadium of Light should the moves go ahead. This could prove crucial in their battle against the drop.
