Aston Villa make move for Wigan Athletic star

Championship side Aston Villa have made a move to sign Wigan Athletic midfielder Nick Powell, according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

Wigan have apparently rejected Villa’s move so far but the Midlands club are expected to come back in for him when they have sold some players first.

Villa boss Steve Bruce knows Nick Powell well from when he signed him on loan for Hull City in January 2016 from Manchester United. Although Powell’s time with the Tigers was affected by injury, Bruce must have seen enough in him to want to sign him again.

Powell has been in decent form for Wigan in League One this season and has helped them get to the top of the league. He has scored 6 goals so far this season for the Latics and was linked with a move away in the summer after ending last season on great form.

The 23 year-old started his career with Crewe Alexandra and was tipped as one of the country’s brightest young talents as a youngster at Crewe. He was snapped up by Manchester United in 2012 for around £6 million and even scored on his debut against Wigan at Old Trafford.

However, injuries have affected Powell’s career and he was shipped out on loan to Wigan, Leicester and Hull City whilst at United and was finally allowed to leave on a permanent basis when he joined the Latics last summer. His career does look to be back on track now though and a move to Villa could be on the horizon.
