PREVIEW: Cheltenham face Newport as they look to return to winning ways

Cheltenham Town face play-off chasing Newport at Whaddon Road this Saturday as they look to return to winning ways.

The Robins are currently sat in 15th place having won 30 points so far this season, just seven points away from Coventry in the final play-off spot. Visitors Newport are closer to the play-offs, sitting in 10th, a victory at Whaddon Road could lift the Exiles into the top seven.

Gary Johnson’s side come into the game in rather inconsistent form having won one and lost two of their last three games. Losses against play-off chasing Coventry and Yeovil Town came either side of a win at strugglers Barnet.

Kevin Dawson and Carl Winchester’s first half strikes were enough for the Robins to take all the points home from north-London.

The hosts are still without George Lloyd who suffered a hip injury looks set to miss out whilst Jordan Cranston, Jaanai Gordon and Jordon Forster are still out.

County come into the clash in steady form having fired blanks in their last two fixtures. Four points from their last three games would suggest there is a gap emerging between them and the play-offs.

However, Michael Flynn’s side remain two points outside the top seven.

A 2-0 loss to fellow promotion candidates Wycombe Wanderers on Boxing Day saw Flynn’s men slip further down the table.

County will be without Joss Labadie and Mark O’Brein who are both serving suspensions.

These two sides met back in September with the Exiles claiming all three points at Rodney Parade.

Padraig Amond’s first half strike was enough to see off Cheltenham who had their own chances to collect the points.
