Match Preview: Oldham Athletic vs Bristol Rovers

Oldham Athletic host Bristol Rovers at the weekend as they look to bounce back from two defeats in their past two games.

Oldham enter the clash in poor form having only picked up one point from a possible nine available. Latics tasted a 2-1 defeat at home to Fleetwood on Boxing Day but will be looking to make things right against Bristol Rovers. Latics are sat in 18th in League One with 27 points only four points away from the drop zone.

Bristol Rovers make the long trip to Oldham sat in 16th with 1 more point than Oldham. The Gas travelled to the Bescot Stadium on Boxing Day and Darrell Clarke saw his side draw 0-0 with Walsall. Bristol Rovers have won two of their previous 5 games and a win could see Darrell Clarke’s side go as high as 11th.

This clash could be the last appearance for three Latics stars. Oldham’s trio Eoin Doyle, Kean Bryan and Jack Byrne’s loans expire on January 1st. But Doyle is likely to miss the game through illness which has left him out of the Plymouth and Fleetwood game for Latics. The trio have all been involved in the clubs revival this season and have impressed the supporters at Boundary Park.

Oldham will be keen to keep all three but they are aware that they will face competition from a host of clubs for their signatures. It’s understood that Scunthorpe United have placed a £300,000 bid for Eoin Doyle, who seeks to leave Preston permanently.

It might also be a last appearance for Bristol Rovers key man Billy Bodin. Bodin is Bristol Rovers top goalscorer and he’s attracted a host of interest from clubs ahead of the January transfer window. His contract is due to expire at the end of the season, so this is the only time for Darrell Clarke to cash in their key man in order to improve his side, to avoid fears of relegation.

Last Meeting –

Bristol Rovers (Gaffney 83′) (Sweeney 53′) 2 – 3 Oldham Athletic (Byrne 49′) (Davies 71′) (Doyle 88′)

Attendance 7,908 (123 Visiting Supporters)
