Darren Bent, Burton Albion transfer favourites in race for former England striker

Burton Albion transfer favourites in race for former England striker

Burton Albion are a side flirting with a relegation battle and are sitting just a point shy of said relegation places. They need additional firepower and they may yet get that according to online bookmakers Bet Victor.

According to Bet Victor, the Brewers are seen at 2/1 favourites to land Derby County’s 33-year-old former 12-cap England striker Darren Bent.

Bent, who has missed most of the current Sky bet Championship campaign with Derby County due to a hamstring injury suffered just ahead of the season’s start in late July. Having just returned to fitness a month ago, Bent has seen out a full 90 minutes in a Premier League 2 game – a 2-0 loss to Leicester City Under-23s.

With the likelihood being that he’s surplus to requirements at the iPro Stadium after 88 appearances and 28 goals for the Rams, it seems that bookmakers see some value in him being moved on.

Since being out injured, 25-year-old Czech hotshot Matej Vydra has shot to prominence (13 goals) and Bent has also fallen behind fellow veteran David Nugent (six goals), loanee Sam Winnall (four goals) and youngster Tom Lawrence (two goals).

Burton Albion are one of a number of Championship and League One clubs said to be interested in the signing of the once prolific Bent. Whilst they are heading the list with odds of 2/1, they are followed by fellow Championship side Barnsley and League One side Charlton who both sit further out at odds of 8/1.

Marginally further out than that duo are a trio of sides on odds of 10/1 to land Bent, these clubs being: Championship strugglers Bolton Wanderers, Scottish giants Rangers and League One side Scunthorpe United.

A player like Darren Bent could be just the tonic that a side like Burton need in their battle to pull away from relegation and remain in the second tier of English football.
