HEAD-TO-HEAD: Sheffield Wednesday v Middlesbrough

Sheffield Wednesday take on Middlesbrough at Hillsborough in the Sky Bet Championship this afternoon in a clash which both sides desperately need to win.

The meeting will be the 108th between the two sides and ahead of the clash in South Yorkshire, The72 takes a look at the head-to-head record between them.

The success of both sides in this particular fixture has been relatively equal. Sheffield Wednesday have won on 46 occasions while Middlesbrough have recorded 44 victories. Draws have been rare with only 17 of the 107 meetings finishing on level terms.

The first fixture to be played out between the two sides came in the FA Cup in 1895 with Sheffield Wednesday winning the match 6-1. That margin of victory remains The Owls’ greatest 122 years on from that maiden success. Wednesday have beaten Boro by a five-goal margin on one other occasion although that result was recorded way back in 1904.

Middlesbrough’s biggest victory over The Owls came in 1974 in an old Division Two fixture at Ayresome Park when the Teessiders won 8-0. On that occasion, Graeme Souness bagged a hat-trick for Boro, Alan Foggon grabbed himself a brace and there were goals for John Hickton, David Mills and Bobby Murdoch.

It is Middlesbrough who have had dominated recent meetings between the two sides. Boro have won their last three fixtures against Wednesday while they have kept clean sheets in the last two. Prior to that run, Wednesday had been unbeaten in five against the Teessiders, winning four and drawing one of that quintet of fixtures.

With both sides having faltered in the Sky Bet Championship during the first half of this season, their respective campaigns are at breaking point and this afternoon’s clash is arguably one of the most important of recent times.
