Imps set to face tricky festive period

Lincoln City manager Danny Cowley expects a tricky festive period but insists his non-league upbringing can only help the Imps.

The Imps, as well as every other SkyBet League Two club, start a hectic run of fixtures starting with a long away trip to Newport County on Saturday and ends with a trip to free-scoring Luton Town on New Years Day.

Squashed in between are two home fixtures with Stevenage on Boxing Day and fellow promoted club Forest Green Rovers to top off a memorable year at Sincil Bank.

Danny and brother Nicky are used to this congestion of fixtures having come through the non league pyramid. Speaking in his press conference he said:

“Four games in nine days is tough for our players physically but we’d be used to it from our days at Concord Rangers and Braintree Town.”

Cowley spoke about the difficulties of being a coach at this time of year having to freshen up the training schedule to keep the players engaged:

“We’ve got a really good group but you’ve got to adapt your training at this time, it’s about preparing and then recovering for the games.”

The Imps face a relatively tough festive period with sides chasing the play-offs, the title or to stay in the division down the bottom.

The 12 points over the Christmas period can really make or break a season in such a compact division like SkyBet League Two, Cowley stated:

“We’ve got four games in nine days, that means there’s twelve points to play for and we know that these twelve points could have a huge impact on our season.”

The Imps start their slippery slope of a festive season at Rodney Parade this Saturday.
