Scunthorpe United leading the race for prolific goalscorer

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Scunthorpe are leading the race to sign inform Preston North End striker Eoin Doyle.

Scunthorpe United have reportedly offered Preston North End around £300,000 to acquire the services of Eoin Doyle, who is currently joint top goalscorer in League One.

Scunthorpe are currently sat 5th in League One occupying a play off stop. Scunthorpe drew 2-2 with MK Dons at the weekend. Graham Alexander is said to be keen on the Irish forward but Doyle would have tough competition at Glanford Park as Scunthorpe already have a strong front line which includes, Paddy Madden, Kevin van Veen, Tom Hopper, Lee Novak and Simon Church.

Doyle is on-loan at Oldham Athletic from Championship side Preston North End, and scored a dramatic late equaliser for his team as they drew 1-1 against Doncaster Rovers at the Keepmoat Stadium during the weekend. Doyle has 14 goal in 21 appearances for Oldham in all competitions so far this season, but his loan deal is set to expire on January 1.

Preston will be looking to offload Doyle permanently especially after his parent club Preston agreed a deal to sign Motherwell striker Louis Moult last week for around £500,000 and made him an offer worth more than 10 times his current wage.

Doyle started his career in Ireland with spells at Shellbourne, Shamrock Rovers and Sligo Rovers and in 2011 he made the move to Hibernian where he netted 11 goals in a two-year spell.

Chesterfield secured the signing of Doyle in 2013 and he helped them to the League Two title in his debut season and finished the club’s top goalscorer.

The following season, Doyle’s impressive start with Chesterfield, scoring 25 goals, earned him a move to Championship side Cardiff City for an undisclosed fee.

Following five goals in 16 games, Doyle joined Preston North End on loan before making his transfer permanent at the start of the 2016/17 season. Doyle has made 39 appearances for Preston North End but only scored 5 goals for The Lilywhites.
