Lincoln City talisman Matt Green is loving the opportunity to play with his old strike partner Matt Rhead once more.
The pair enjoyed a fruitful time together at Mansfield Town, helping them win promotion from the Conference back to the Football League in the 2012/2013 season.
The pair also helped Mansfield to a credible cup run that season, eventually losing to Liverpool in the third round. Knocking current club Lincoln out in the second round with both scoring crucial goals to send the game into a replay.
Green notched an impressive 25 goals in that season which caught the eye of Championship side Birmingham City. After a successful trial with the Blues, Green signed a two-year deal with the club.
Whilst Green was plying his trade for Birmingham in the Championship, Rhead would remain at Mansfield for another two seasons before making the switch to Sincil Bank in the summer of 2015.
Now back together at Sincil Bank, Green spoke after his side’s 2-0 victory over Accrington Stanley about how he’s enjoying playing with his former partner in crime:
“You can see, he’s so effective at this level and he’s such a handful. I’m grateful to be at the club.”
“He’s brought so many other qualities to his game since the last time I played with him. I think he’s really coming into his prime now.
“I think Lincoln are going to see the best years of him.”
The pair have now scored in back to back games, scoring both goals in Lincoln’s 2-0 wins against Yeovil Town and Accrington Stanley respectively.
Green’s penalty was his fourth goal in as many games after he converted from the penalty spot after Rhead had allowed the high confidence striker to open the scoring against Accrington:
“I gave him the penalty against Carlisle that I’d won and today he’s turned around to me and said stick this one in.
“We’re both goal scorers and have both played enough games and have enough experience to put them in the back of the net.”
The Imps lie in 6th place in League Two, just three points off the automatic places but just four points off twelfth placed Swindon. Lincoln travel to Newport County next Saturday, not under-estimating the threat that Michael Flynn’s side posses:
“Games are so hard sometimes and you’ve just got to dig in. But we’ve got another huge game against Newport County now which is another six pointer.”
