Late heartbreak for Doncaster as Doyle ends his drought to rescue Latics at the Keepmoat Stadium.
Darren Ferguson’s Doncaster entered the game with an unchanged side from their defeat at Oxford. Latics manager Richie Wellens made one change from their victory over Northampton Town, Cameron Dummingan (injured) was replaced by experienced defender Brian Wilson.
Latics started the brighter of the two sides and just five minutes into the game a neat interchange from Eoin Doyle and Jack Byrne allowed Nepomuceno to try his luck from 25 yards but he shot was fired over the crossbar.
Doncaster put pressure on Latics following good work from Beestin on the right, he found Marquis lurking on the edge of the box but he sliced his shot wide of Placide’s goal. Only four minutes later Marquis was handed a similar opportunity but he had the same outcome as he sliced wide again.
21 minutes into the first half an impressive move from Obadeyi nearly saw Latics take the lead as he took it around three men, laid it off to Nepomuceno who beat the goalkeeper but Joe Wright manages to stop the ball on the line.
Following this, Alfie May is put through on goal, who only had Placide to beat but the goalkeeper pulled off an unbelievable save to deny the striker from 12 yards.
The sides entered the break on level terms (0-0), there were no changes from either side at the interval.
On the 58th minute Gerrard was booked after fouling May on corner of the box. From the resulting free-kick the ball falls for Andy Butler in the box on his own and he rifles his header past Placide to give Doncaster the lead. (1-0)
After going behind Wellens made a double change for Latics as Ryan McLaughlin and Craig Davies replace Gevaro Nepomuceno and Rob Hunt, Latics switched to a 3-5-2 formation.
79 minutes on the clock Byrne finds Holloway inside the box, he shoots but drags his shot wide. Very close for Latics.
In the dying minutes of the game Gardner puts a cross into the box and finds Holloway who flicks it on to Doyle who fires home from close range. (1-1)
On the 90th minute Latics had the ball in the goal again but Davies was adjudged to have fouled his man.
